CHILDREN´S CUBIC PUZZLE

PROGRAMS USED

Photoshop

Illustrator

The challenge of this academic project was to develop a design system and apply it to the creation of a product. In this case, the design system created is inspired by the sea. It comprises 5 elements: typography, grid, layout, color pallete and illustration. They are all inspired by characteristics of the sea:

Contrast: waters that don't mix;
Rhythm: the swell of the waves;
Full and empty: the sound of the rough sea;
Opposition: the sea can be calm or aggressive;
Measure: the rhythm of the waves.

This system was used to create a children's cubic puzzle.

Contrasting

TYPOGRAPHY

To create typographic contrast without using color, I combined a serif font (Fraunces) for titles and highlights, with a sans serif (Poppins) for text. To ensure harmony and readability, I considered weight, height, width and spacing. Both fonts offer a wide range of weights, making it possible to emphasize contrast.

LAYOUT

Inspired by the sound and silence of the tide, I organized the layout in such a way as to maintain a clear and cohesive image, taking advantage of empty spaces to highlight essential elements and improve the legibility of the text on the back of the card.

COLOR PALLETE

To create the color palette, I considered the opposites that the sea represents:
silent or noisy, calm or aggressive, regular or irregular. I used this metaphor as a basis, exploring other possibilities to ensure greater diversity and visual richness for the system.

ILLUSTRATION

In the case of the illustration used in the puzzle, the process involved using the circle as a reference measure within the square, which was then divided into semi-circles and quarter-circles. This method was applied systematically to compose the structure of the illustration.

GRIDS

To create the puzzle grids and cards, I used the square as the unit of measurement, doubling its size in each column. Recreating the idea of the swell of the ocean waves. After completing the puzzle, a continuous image is formed, with no margins or spacing between the columns.
